The first presentation of the prototype of the cultural path in the Libana Quarry – RESTART progress meeting

The progress meeting of the RESTART project partners took place on December 6-8, 2023, under the slogan "In the Footsteps of Schindler's List". Apart from the Old Town, Kazimierz District, and the Schindler's Factory Museum, the main object of interest was the Liban’s Quarry. In 1993, camp scenes for "Schindler's List" were shot here, and the remains of the set enrich the history of the place today. After months of preparation and involvement of the RESTART team from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Resource Management of AGH University of Krakow, in cooperation with the Kraków Municipal Greenspace Authority, on December 6, there was the first presentation of the prototype of the cultural path in the Liban’s Quarry.

The meeting, apart from the mentioned AGH’s project team headed by Dean Professor Marek Cała, was attended by Director of Municipal Greenspace Authority Łukasz Pawlik with staff, RESTART project partners from Lavrion Technological Cultural Park, Greece and Espacio Tormaleo, Spain and representatives of the Tourism Department of the City Hall in Krakow and the PODGÓRZE Association, as well as a specialist in social consultations.

In her introduction, prof. Anna Ostręga drew attention to the long and turbulent history of the Liban’s Quarry, as well as the fact that for almost 40 years since the end of the operation, none of the revitalization concepts have been implemented. As part of the RESTART project, the AGH University of Krakow team proposed a prototype of a cultural route. Students of the Revitalization of Industrial Areas field of study involved in this project presented prototypes of architectural structures designed under the supervision of PhD Eng. Arch. Anna Szewczyk-Świątek. Prototypes were presented by: Daria Borowik - CITY ROUNDS, Dominika Karnas - THINNING BENCH, Jakub Šinkovič - LANDSCAPE FRAME, Magdalena Krieger - MEETING SPACE IN A MICRO-AMPHITHEATER SYSTEM MADE OF TRUNKS and Paulina Bańbuła - HABITAT FOR GRABBLES.

Eng. Daria Borowik, the author of the CITY ROUNDS project, presented the idea of using redundant information poles to place information on the industrial, cinematographic, and natural heritage of the quarry. Eng. Dominika Karnas presented a prototype of a THINNING BENCH made of locally available wood, which allows visitors to see the nearby Krakus Mound. Eng. Jakub Šinkovič presented LANDSCAPE FRAME, drawing attention to the landscape values of the quarry, referring in symbolism to the history of World War II. Eng. Magdalena Krieger and Eng. Paulina Bańbuła also presented their projects: MEETING SPACE IN A MICRO-AMPHITHEATER SYSTEM MADE OF TRUNKS and HABITAT FOR GRABBLES, noting that due to heavy snowfall, they will be completed in the next stage. The tour ended with lunch around a bonfire, during which it was possible to exchange opinions on presented prototypes and suggestions regarding further development of the cultural route in the Liban’s Quarry.

The December meeting at the Liban’s Quarry proved that by working together, based on the knowledge and experience of experts from many fields, it is possible to highlight all the equally important values of the Quarry. Although it is only the beginning of the work, the effect achieved can be considered a milestone. This result was possible only thanks to the cooperation of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Resource Management of AGH University of Krakow team and the Krakow Municipal Greenspace Authority, which is an important premise not only for the future revitalization of the Liban’s Quarry but also for further work on revitalization tools developed as a part of the RESTART project.
